SECTION A: EQUIPMENT, DEVICES AND TECHNOLOGY

The physical therapist has an extensive barrage of equipment devices and technology available. Definitions are as follows:

Adaptive devices: A variety of implements or equipment used to aid patients/clients in performing movements, tasks, or activities. Adaptive devices include:

  • Environmental controls

  • Hospital beds

  • Raised toilet seats

  • Seating systems

Assistive devices: A variety of implements or equipment used to aid patients/clients in performing movements, tasks, or activities. Assistive devices include:

  • Canes

  • Crutches

  • Long-handled reachers

  • Percussors and vibrators

  • Power devices

  • Static and dynamic splints

  • Walkers

  • Wheelchairs

The role of the physical therapist with respect to assistive devices is to choose the one that is most appropriate, and then teach the patient to use the device correctly. Table 8A–1 provides information on assistive devices for gait, including appropriate measurement of the device, and gait pattern most frequently used with the device. Tables 8A–2 and 8A–3 provide stair protocols and frequently used gait patterns.
