Description

  • Tear of the fibrocartilage of the meniscus
  • Tears commonly occur from a twisting of the knee with knee flexion
  • Can develop because of laxity in the knee
  • Complaint of joint locking and inability to straighten the knee

Essentials of Diagnosis

  • Frequency
    • No true data on isolated incidence and prevalence of meniscal injury2
  • Mechanism of injury
    • Activities that include cutting, deceleration, and landing from a jump3
  • Classification of tear3
    • Longitudinal tear: vertical tear in the meniscus with a longitudinal direction; usually located in the periphery of the meniscus
      • The longer the tear, the more unstable it is, and the end result is the dislocated central part of the meniscus (bucket-handle tear)
    • Horizontal tear: horizontal cleavage in the meniscal tissue
    • Radial tear: vertical tear starting in the free (central) margin of the meniscal tissue
    • Flap tear: oblique vertical cleavage causing a flap tear (parrot beak); a flap tear can also be caused by a horizontal tear
    • Tear in degenerative meniscus: a tear or ...
