PY - 1998 T2 - Concise Pathology, 3e AB - The ear (Figure 32-1) is divided into (1) the external ear; (2) the middle ear, which is separated from the external auditory meatus by the tympanic membrane and is in communication anteriorly with the pharynx via the auditory tube (eustachian tube) and posteriorly with the mastoid air cells; and (3) the inner ear, consisting of the semicircular canals, which are part of the vestibular system, and the cochlea, which is the hearing sense organ. The vestibular and auditory nerves arise in the inner ear and pass to the brain stem in the internal auditory meatus.
