It is estimated that 2.5 million cases of TBI occur annually, leading to over 2.2 million emergency department (ED) visits, 280,000 hospitalizations, and 52,000 deaths.1,2 Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the total annual rate of TBI has increased from 521.0 per 100,000 persons in 2001 to 823.7 per 100,000 persons in 2010. At the same time, the mortality from TBI has decreased slightly from 18.5 per 100,000 persons in 2001 to 17.1 per 100,000 persons in 20103 (Fig. 19–1). Currently, it is estimated that an overall 12.1% to 41% of adults have a history of TBI.4–7
